How SPX Graphics Helped Major Finnish Broadcaster Cut Costs, Automate Workflows, and Future-Proof Its TV Graphics.
When Nelonen Media set out to modernize its TV graphics, it turned to its trusted tech partner, Media Tailor, who chose SPX Graphics as the open, HTML graphics engine to replace legacy workflows.
Cost-effectiveness and concrete savings? Automations and unbeatable user experience? Versatile, advanced TV graphics for one of Europe’s biggest broadcasters?
Yup, that’s what we do.
Our long-term partner, Media Tailor Group, has trusted our HTML graphics solutions since 2021. They adopted SPX Graphics as the core graphics engine for Finnish broadcast giant Nelonen Media's linear TV channels.
“We were among the first to adopt SPX Graphics. We saw that their open alternative for live graphics was exactly what Nelonen Media needed – then, now, and in the future.”
- Markus Paul, COO of Media Tailor.

How it all started
Nelonen Media asked its long-term media technology partner, Media Tailor, to design and implement an application-based solution for graphic management. The mission was driven by the need to outsource, modernize, and automate the processing and running of TV broadcast graphics.
Previously, maintaining the graphics system took up a lot of Nelonen’s internal resources. It didn’t deliver the highly automated workflow they wanted: file format restrictions, hard-to-manage rules, and slow, manual playlist encoding made operations inefficient.
“We needed something future-proof and advanced enough to meet these comprehensive requirements,” Paul explains.
That’s where we – SPX Graphics – came in.

Dynamic HTML graphics for broadcast
We built a comprehensive TV graphics package to Nelonen Media's needs. The solution covers now-next-later graphics, cross-promotion slots, and sponsorship placeholders. All automated by default, but fully controllable manually through SPX when needed. Live social media integration during broadcasts added another layer of flexibility.
The foundation? HTML.
Unlike closed, vendor-specific legacy systems, HTML-based graphics rely on open web technologies to produce dynamic, reusable visuals that can be layered over video or embedded directly within a broadcast. This openness is what makes the difference. It means no lock-in, no black boxes, and no waiting for a technician every time something needs updating.
This wasn't about swapping one tool for another. It was about fundamentally rethinking how broadcast graphics should work.
The system delivers the reliability and precision live broadcasting demands, while remaining as flexible and responsive as a modern web application.

HTML graphics – a portal to real-life benefits in broadcasting
With reliable automation under continuous maintenance and control by Media Tailor, Nelonen Media achieves concrete resource savings.
“SPX allows us to develop our playout offering in areas which have proved difficult with the previous graphics system. This has increased our value in the production chain,” summarizes Paul.
HTML graphics are easy to manage – even under last-minute changes. The solution also opens up new opportunities for expanding advertising sales.
And because it’s customized and highly scalable, it’s ready for what’s next, including enhanced use of external data with artificial intelligence for analytics and optimization.
